THE GRANDFATHER OF COCKTAILS

THE ONE THAT STARTED IT ALL

Before the development of advanced bartending techniques and recipes in the late nineteeth century, the Old Fashioned was one of the simplest and earliest cocktails. In 1862, Jerry Thomas wrote the first book for bartenders. In it, his version of the Old Fashioned, named the “Whiskey Cocktail,” used different types of liqueurs instead of sugar, spurring a similar trend amongst other bartenders. The reemerging classic version uses bourbon or rye mixed with simple syrup and bitters, served over ice in a lowball glass with an orange peel. Today, we’re mixing it up by using rum as a base spirit, bringing a whole new class of old fashioned cocktails to the forefront.
